Widescreen Weekend at the National Media Museum, Bradford

21-10-2015

Film buffs, experts and royalty from all four corners of the world gathered in Bradford (the UNESCO City of Film) to celebrate Widescreen Weekend, presented by the National Media Museum from 15-18th October.

Now in its 20th year, the festival is a celebration of the past, present and future of widescreen film demonstrated through film screenings, guest speakers and special events. This year the festival featured large-screen format films in an array of widescreen technologies, from 70mm widescreen to ‘smellovision’.

Study Links’ Jane and Angela were amongst those who attended this year’s Keynote Speech: Douglas Trumbull – The State of Cinema.  The audience were given an insight into Trumbull’s musings on the state of cinema and what he hopes the future may hold, followed by a rare screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey on 70mm, a film in which Trumbull was hired by Stanley Kubrick to work on the special effects. Trumble is also known for his special effects work on Blade Runner and Close Encounters of the Third Kind and for directing a number of films including Silent Running and Brainstorm .

As well as the Keynote Speech given by Douglas Trumbull, Jane and Angela were also invited to the opening night film followed by a screening of Oklahoma.
