What is AEGIS, and why does it matter when choosing a guardian?
AEGIS accreditation is the clearest signal that a guardianship organisation has been inspected against real safeguarding standards. Here is what it covers and what to ask for.
When parents compare guardianship organisations, almost everything looks reassuring on a website. Accreditation is one of the few things that can be checked independently.
What AEGIS is
AEGIS, the Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students, inspects and accredits guardianship organisations in the UK. Accreditation is not a badge you buy. Policies, procedures, paperwork and practice are examined, and re-examined on a cycle.
What it means for your child
An accredited organisation has to show how it recruits and checks host families, how it responds in an emergency, how concerns are recorded and escalated, and how it communicates with schools and parents. Only if your guardian is AEGIS accredited can you be confident of a minimum duty of care.
Three questions worth asking any guardian
- When were you last inspected, and can we see the report?
- Who is your designated safeguarding lead, and how do we reach them?
- What exactly happens in the first hour of an emergency?
