Case study: settling a nervous Year 9 student
A student arrived mid-year with limited English and no UK experience. Here is what changed over two terms, and what we would do again.
The situation
A Year 9 student joined a Yorkshire boarding school in January, mid-year, with conversational English and no experience of living away from home. Parents were anxious and communicating through an agent.
What we did
We matched a host family fifteen minutes from school so weekends felt easy rather than logistical. We set fortnightly check-ins for the first term and translated school reports into Mandarin. We asked the school for a named tutor contact and introduced ourselves properly.
The outcome
By the summer term, check-ins moved to monthly at the student’s request. Grades improved in three subjects, and the student stayed with the same host family for the following two years.
What we would do again
Match on travel time first. A short journey home on a Friday afternoon does more for a homesick student than almost anything else.
